Construction starts at 120 MW solar plant in Botswana

12 April 2024

Norwegian renewable energy developer Scatec has commenced construction of the 120 MW Mmadinare Solar Complex in Botswana. Located in Mmadinare District, near the former mining town of Selebi-Phikwe, the project will provide power to approximately 20,000 households.

The project is 100% owned by Scatec and, upon completion, will supply power to the state-owned Botswana Power Corporation through a 25-year power purchase agreement. Originally planned as a 60MW solar PV project, Scatec received approval from Botswana authorities in the third quarter of 2023 to expand the project by an additional 60MW.

“By doubling the total capacity of the solar power plant, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our strategy, robust business model, and drive to contribute to the green energy transition in Africa,” stated Scatec CEO, Terje Pilskog.
