Press release: Fake 200 pula banknotes

GABORONE — April 13 2023 – The Bank of Botswana hereby alerts the public of the existence of counterfeit P200 banknotes that are in circulation. The counterfeit banknotes were detected in the Francistown and Tonota policing areas and bear serial numbers: AP5721548 and AR1672699.

The public is advised to be extremely vigilant in accepting cash payment for goods and services and exercise caution when accepting banknotes from any source, and to closely examine banknote security features.

Genuine P200 banknotes can be identified by the following security features

Watermark – a clear patch on the right-hand side of the front of the banknote with a rampant zebra and the number 200 that can be seen when the banknote is held up to light;

Holographic Stripe – this shows images of the coat of arms and shifting 200 and a zebra head when the banknote is tilted;

Enhanced Intaglio – a raised print effect can be felt by rubbing a finger over the number 200 on the top left-hand corner of the banknote;

Blind Recognition Feature – five purple dots appear on the front right-hand edge of the banknote and can be felt by rubbing a figure over to assist the visually impaired to recognise the banknote; and

Windowed Security Thread – a red and green colour shifting thread and the text “BOB 200” can be seen at the back of the banknote.

Members of the public are advised to report any suspicious banknotes to the nearest police station or Bank of Botswana offices in Gaborone and Francistown. The Bank assures the public that it remains committed to ensuring clean and genuine banknotes and coin are in circulation. (Bank of Botswana)
