De Beers is committed to advancing Botswana’s vision of building a knowledge-based economy.

De Beers chief executive officer, Al Cook, said this on Friday after paying a courtesy visit on President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi. When briefing the media, Cook said the diamond mining giant wanted to continue playing its role as Botswana’s strategic development partner.

Cook, who was accompanied by the outgoing CEO, Bruce Cleaver and De Beers resident director, Neo Moroka, said based on the constructive meeting with President Masisi, he was confident that the partnership would continue.

“We had a constructive meeting with President Masisi, and it was a good conversation about the future,” he added.

Cook also said President Masisi had the interests of Batswana at heart.

“It is very clear that first and foremost in the President’s mind is the interest of the Botswana people,” he said.

He said President Masisi advocated for Batswana’s long-term benefits in the diamond deal that De Beers has with Botswana government.
