Poacher killed in Botswana

A poacher was killed in an anti-poaching incident in Ditshiping village, Okavango Delta, the Botswana Defense Force (BDF) said Tuesday.

BDF spokesperson Colonel Tebo Dikole said the incident happened on August 9 at around 9:45 a.m. local time, about 13 kilometres from Ditshiping village, when the army was engaged in a firefight with armed poachers suspected of being part of a network responsible for cross-border poaching.

Tools of the poachers’ trade recovered from the scene include a hunting rifle, commonly used for killing large game, Dikole said. He also stated that organised poaching of big game such as rhinoceros and elephants, particularly in the Okavango Delta, continues to threaten Botswana’s fauna and stressed the BDF remains steadfast in its efforts to combat this.
