David Oyelowo gets surprise visit from president of Botswana

David Oyelowo, who stars as Sir Seretse Khama, the first president of Botswana in “A United Kingdom,” says his character’s real-life son, Ian Khama, the current president of Botswana, came to see them on set during filming in Botswana.

Rosamund Pike plays President Ian Khama’s s mother, Ruth Williams-Khama. Oyelowo told reporters at the premiere at the Paris Theatre on Monday;

“Rosamund was in the middle of doing a scene and [the president] turned up unannounced in his own helicopter, by himself, landed it, and sat down next to me behind the monitor. He turned to me and said, ‘I never thought I would see my parents again. ”

Did You Know?

Whether it’s because Oyelowo has an affinity to Botswana or it’s purely coincidental, he previously featured in the acclaimed No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency TV series as philanderer, Kremlin Busang. The popular TV series is based on the Alexander McCall Smith’s series of novels, in which a Motswana woman sets up the country’s first female-owned detective agency.

David Oyelowo said of the series at the time;

“This film has been so much fun. Of all the roles I’ve played, I haven’t had the opportunity to do much comedy, so I’ve bled him for everything he is worth.

“When I first read the script for this film, what struck me was how relieved, happy and inspired I was by the fact that we were getting to see an African story without it being doom and gloom and oppression and wars. It is a celebration of life and the central character Mma Ramotswe is herself a celebration of all that is wonderful about Africa.”
