The president, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi will officially launch the SmartBots Village Connectivity project on the 18th of this month
A news release from the Ministry of the State President says village connectivity is a SmartBots flagship project aimed at accelerating digital connectivity. The releases says this will be done by deploying state of the art infrastructure to over 500 villages across Botswana. The process is set to be done in phases.
It says the project will connect public facilities to high-speed internet at defined Digital Connectivity Standards to ensure standardised connectivity and user experiences throughout the country.
It further says the project essentially aims to close the connectivity gap – leaving no one behind and will play a foundational role in realising digital transformation in Botswana. Phase one of the Village Connectivity project, which is nearing completion, connects 1 138 public facilities in 144 villages across all districts of Botswana.
According to the release, the project covers a population of 1.6 million Batswana and provides free public internet access to citizens, residents and businesses alike, enabling them to better interact, learn, work and do business.
