Safari Air names young Motswana pilot as its operations director

4 October 2023

Thuto Batshidi, one of the youngest commercial pilots in the country has been promoted to the position of Operations Manager and Executive Director at Safari Air. Safari Air is the flying wing of the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) listed tourism outfit, Chobe Holdings.

Amid decades-long droughts of Batswana pilots in local airline cockpits, among Safari Air’s missions is to hire and retain Batswana pilots. Chobe Holdings Managing Director Lempheditse Odumetse told the Sunday Standard that as a subsidiary of Chobe Holdings Limited, Safari Air operates under the overarching vision and values of its parent company.

“Chobe Holdings Limited’s dedication to empower citizens aligns perfectly with Batshidi’s own aspirations and serves as a testament to the company’s commitment to fostering growth and development within the local community,” said Odumetse.

As Operations Manager, Batshidi assumes responsibility for the overall direction and supervision of all company operations. The role comes with significant responsibilities, which may serve as a constant source of motivation for the Bobonong native. Odumetse said he has no doubt about the ability of what Batshidi can deliver.

“His inspiring journey serves as a reminder that with dedication and perseverance, anyone can pursue and achieve their dreams and goals.

Thuto hopes that his story will serve as a catalyst for others to chase their dreams and reach their full potential,” said Odumetse.

Remarkable journey

Batshidi’s remarkable journey within the aviation industry began with a simple cockpit picture that ignited his passion at the tender age of 12. It was his determination that led him to pursue his dream in 2011 when he enrolled with Aptrac Aviation, obtaining his commercial pilot license with multi-engine and instrument rating. His commitment and hard work paid off, as he secured a ‘high flying’ position with Safari Air in 2014.

Batshidi’s exceptional skills and dedication at Safari Air propelled him to greater heights within the company. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a Training Captain and in 2018, being promoted to the esteemed position of Chief Pilot.

Batshidi’s inspiring journey within Safari Air not only exemplifies his personal achievements but also reflects the opportunities and support provided by Chobe Holdings Limited. Through its commitment to empowering citizens, the BSE quoted company continues to play a vital role in the advancement of its employees, enabling them to reach their full potential and contribute to the growth and success of the aviation industry in Botswana.
