A Russian Language Center will be established at the University of Botswana (UB) within the next two months, according to a memorandum of understanding signed on Wednesday between UB and the University Perm State Pedagogical and Humanitarian (PSHPU) and Russian BioTech University.

“In the first stage, we propose to launch a centre for open education at your university,” said Anastasya Vertyanova, director of the international department of PSHPU, during the ceremony at UB.

According to Vertyanova, the centre, which is targeting 300 participants for its first batch of learners, is expected to open in early September. In addition, UB and PSHPU will engage in joint development and methodological support of programmes for Botswana students entering higher education institutions in Russia, she said.

The universities will also cooperate on research projects in areas such as the development of education systems in Botswana and Russia, Vertyanova added.

UB and BioTech University will explore possibilities for cooperation on research in food science and other priority sectors, as well as the exchange of staff and students, according to Pavel Goultiaev, director of the international cooperation department at BioTech University.

“Food security is critical, not just for Botswana, but for the entire African region,” he said.

UB Vice-Chancellor David Norris commented on the memorandum saying that the acquisition of strategic partners remains essential to the university’s transformation project.
