The European Union Delegate in partnership with Alliance Français opened this year’s film festival with an interesting documentary dubbed An Invisible Omen: A Notion of Going Home at New Capitol Cinema on Wednesday.

The festival themed: Fighting For…, which shows that people’s fights and struggles can be of a different nature and can shape their future, is in its fifth year and ends today. An Invisible Omen is about Peter Mbarimbari from South Sudan, who was forced to flee his home due to the country’s civil war.

He shares his experience of living between Nigeria and China and how he rarely went home to visit his wife, children and family. He talks about his bad and good experiences o relating to how the war had left most of his countrymen homeless and orphaned. He discusses how the struggles have helped him improve his life and that of the family he was separated from for a long time.

The other movie, Smuggling Hendrix, is about a musician who is preparing to leave Cyprus for a better life overseas. The leading star finds his plans twisted and disrupted after his dog goes missing and crosses the border that divides the Greek South from the Turkish North.

He struggles to sneak the dog back into the country and later gives up after almost getting arrested. The movie shines a spotlight on about how people around the border live and how they relate. Through the EU Film Festival, movie lovers will enjoy 10 various films from EU countries including Belgium, Czech Republic, France, and Germany. Some of the films have been sourced locally from some of the best directors that Botswana has to offer.
