Tanzania e-Office system application thrills Botswana experts

Experts from the Botswana National Archives and Records Services (BNARS) have been inspired over application of e-office system in the government’s institutions.

The group of experts expressed their admiration recently after visiting the offices of the Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) in Dar es Salaam. Their visit was aimed at learning how the authority uses ICT systems to manage health and safety issues in workplaces.

According to the BNARS Acting Director, Gopolang Maakwe, Botswana is currently developing an e-office system to make it easier for the general public to access services. Maakwe admitted that they had found it crucial to learn from nations that have advanced in the application of such methods.

“We have come to Tanzania to learn how the country built and successfully used the e-office system in more than 200 institutions.

When we heard that Tanzania has been successful in this area, we thought it would be good to have a partner in the exercise so that all institutions of the government of Botswana begins this system starting 2024/25 fiscal year,” said Maakwe.

He added:

“We are pleased to hear that the system being used in Tanzania was prepared by local experts, so even supervision and its maintenance will not be expensive, as the creation of ICT systems has frequently relied on service providers from outside the country, a practice that has been increasing operational costs.”

In addition, he thanked OSHA and the Tanzanian government for their hospitality, and promised that they would continue coming to learn more until they complete developing the system in their country.

For his part, OSHA’s Acting Director of Occupational Safety and Health, Dr Jerome Materu, thanked President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan for enabling OSHA to use such a system and other government systems which have helped increase efficiency in operations.

“The system, along with other systems created by our government, has significantly decreased red tape and sped up the process of providing services to Tanzanians.

In order to serve our stakeholders better, the OSHA uses its own information management system, known as WIMS, in conjunction with other government systems,” Dr Materu explained.
