A second utility-scale 100MW Solar Plant is to be developed in Jwaneng, Botswana after the Mmadinare 100MW Solar Project. Together, these projects represent the second largest renewable energy developments ever undertaken in Botswana, with the largest being the 500MW Maun Solar and Battery Storage Project launched by President Duma Boko in April in partnership with the Oman Investment Authority.

The Jwaneng 100MW Solar Project was officially launched by former president Mokgweetsi Masisi following the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement in Jwaneng in August 2024. The project entailed the development, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of a 100MW solar power plant in Jwaneng.

In addition to the solar plant, the project also included the construction of a 132kV substation and transmission infrastructure to connect the facility to the national grid.

This renewable energy hub is developed and operated by a consortium comprising China Harbour Engineering Company, China International Water & Electric Corporation, and Niu Energy.

The consortium will generate and supply electricity to Botswana Power Corporation under a 25-year power purchase agreement. The developer was selected through a competitive tender process initiated by BPC in May 2023.
