Human rights scholar and University of Botswana (UB) law lecturer, Dr Ontatile Olerile Moeti, has made history by becoming the first Motswana to be enrolled as Legal Counsel on the Roster of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The enrolment places Dr Moeti among a select pool of legal experts eligible to support proceedings before the continental court which was established by the African Union (AU) to adjudicate cases involving human and peoples’ rights violations and to advance the protection of fundamental
freedoms across Africa.
Dr Moeti currently lectures Human Rights Law, International Human Rights Law, Gender and the Law as well as Constitutional Law at the University of Botswana. She is also a litigation attorney before Botswana courts and serves on the Botswana National Human Rights Coordination Committee.
Her appointment marks a significant milestone for Botswana’s legal and academic community, reflecting the growing contribution of local scholars and practitioners to continental governance and human rights institutions. It also highlights the increasing visibility of UB academics within regionaland international legal spaces.
Known for her work in constitutional law and human rights advocacy, Dr Moeti has combined academic scholarship with practical legal engagement, contributing to national conversations on justice, equality and constitutionalism. Her enrolment on the African Court roster extends that contribution beyond Botswana’s borders into continental human rights processes.
The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights plays a central role in interpreting and applying the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and other regional human rights instruments. Legal Counsel on the roster assist in advancing access to justice and strengthening legal representation before the court.
Dr Moeti’s achievement further reinforces the role of the University of Botswana in producing scholars and professionals who contribute meaningfully to policy, governance and legal development at both regional and international level.
