Chobe Holdings Limited, the only eco-tourism company listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange, is expanding into food production through its subsidiary, Chobe Farms to strengthen food security, boost job creation and diversify its business offer beyond tourism.

The company says the venture supplies retailers, hawkers, the hospitality industry and surrounding communities while supporting Botswana’s drive to reduce food imports.

Potato harvesting is now underway, with expected yields of 40 tonnes per hectare across 10 hectares. The crop is projected to generate about P3 million in revenue, although prices have softened due to increased market supply.

Onion harvesting begins next week, with expected yields of 30 tonnes per hectare from eight hectares, while the crop is expected to sell for around P70 per 10kg bag.

The farm also produces bananas, papayas, lemons, limes and naartjies, while its avocado project has recorded an encouraging first harvest of about 30 tonnes between March and May.

Looking ahead, Chobe Farms plans to expand into value-added processing by producing dried and frozen fruit products, frozen chips and potato wedges, and is also exploring the establishment of a fish-and-chips outlet.

Chobe Holdings says the expansion reflects its commitment to economic diversification, food security and employment creation at a time when many Batswana households continue to grapple with economic challenges.
