Gaborone, Botswana – The Government of Botswana, through the Ministries of Transport & Infrastructure, and Trade & Entrepreneurship, has officially inaugurated an electric bus (e-bus) public transport initiative, marking an important step towards modernising public transportation and promoting sustainable mobility in the country.
The initiative, coined Tana Metrobus Public Transport, will be operationalised through Tana Holdings (Pty) Ltd, a subsidiary of the Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA), which will be responsible for facilitating the day-to-day operations of the electric bus service. The introduction of the e-bus service forms part of Government’s efforts to enhance public transport accessibility, efficiency and convenience while exploring environmentally sustainable transport solutions.
Importantly, the initiative is not intended to compete with existing public transport operators, associations or businesses.
Rather, it seeks to complement the existing public transport network by providing additional transport capacity and supporting the broader development of an efficient and inclusive public transportation system.
CEDA recognises the important contribution of existing public transport operators to Botswana’s economy, particularly their role in providing essential mobility services, creating employment and supporting citizen entrepreneurship. The Agency therefore wishes to reassure public transport operators and associations that the introduction of the electric bus service should be viewed as a complementary development within the country’s evolving public transport landscape.
Through Tana Holdings (Pty) Ltd, CEDA will support the operational implementation of the initiative, contributing to Government’s broader objectives of improving service delivery and promoting innovative solutions to national development needs.
Further information regarding operational arrangements, routes and service schedules will be communicated in due course. CEDA remains committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to Botswana’s economic development, innovation and sustainable growth.
