BSB bets on digital banking to become Botswana’s primary bank

24 June 2026

Botswana Savings Bank – BSB says it is investing heavily in digital banking infrastructure, self-service technologies and expanded payment solutions as customer preferences increasingly shift away from traditional branch-based banking towards more convenient digital platforms.

The move comes amid growing competition within Botswana’s banking sector, where financial institutions are racing to improve customer experience through technology-driven services and wider accessibility.

According to BSB, customers can now conduct most routine banking transactions without visiting a branch through the bank’s mobile application, internet banking platform, USSD services, agency banking network and merchant payment solutions. Available digital services include balance enquiries, mini-statements, funds transfers, airtime purchases, utility bill payments and subscription payments. The digital transformation forms part of the bank’s broader strategy to become what it terms

“Botswana’s Primary Bank” the institution customers rely on most for their day-to-day financial needs. Speaking on the transformation drive, BSB acting Chief Executive Officer, Dr Wabo Moswate, said changing customer expectations was forcing banks to rethink how financial services are delivered.

“The future of banking will be defined by accessibility, simplicity and relevance. Customers increasingly expect banking services to be available wherever they are and whenever they need them,” Moswate said.

He noted that the bank’s objective extends beyond digitising existing services and focuses on redesigning the banking experience to better meet the needs of individuals, businesses and communities across the country. Industry observers note that digital banking has become a critical battleground for financial institutions as customers demand faster, more convenient and secure services. The shift has also become an important tool for improving financial inclusion, particularly in areas where access to physical banking infrastructure remains limited.

BSB says its expanding digital ecosystem and agency banking model are already helping reduce dependence on traditional branch transactions while extending financial services into underserved communities.

The bank’s latest plans include the deployment of 20 additional Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) across strategic locations nationwide, a move expected to strengthen access to cash and self-service banking facilities.

In addition, BSB is developing digitally enabled branch formats that will complement its existing network and offer customers faster service delivery and greater flexibility in how they interact with the bank. The institution is also seeking to strengthen its merchant acquiring and card acceptance capabilities as part of efforts to support businesses and promote wider adoption of electronic payments in Botswana’s economy.

Financial inclusion remains a key pillar of the bank’s strategy. As a government-owned institution with a national mandate, BSB has historically played an important role in mobilising savings and extending banking services to segments of the population that may otherwise remain outside the formal financial system. Moswate said the bank’s growth ambitions are closely linked to improving customer experience and expanding access to financial services.

“Becoming Botswana’s primary bank requires more than growing our customer base. It requires us to continually improve how customers experience banking,” he said.

He added that the bank’s long-term vision is to build a modern financial institution capable of supporting economic participation, promoting financial inclusion and contributing to Botswana’s development agenda. As digital transformation continues to reshape the financial services landscape globally, BSB’s latest investments signal its intention to play a more prominent role in Botswana’s evolving banking sector while leveraging technology to bring banking services closer to customers across the country.
