Botswana says US appetite for natural diamonds is picking up as global push kicks in

27 September 2026

Summary: Botswana sees a clear uptick in US demand for mined diamonds, hinting the long slump may be turning. Minerals and Energy Minister Bogolo Kenewendo told Bloomberg sales at US independent jewellers climbed 8.8% in the first half of the year. Under the Luanda Accord signed last June, Botswana and partners will channel 1% of annual diamond revenues into a Natural Diamond Council marketing campaign.

What Botswana is reporting

Minerals and Energy Minister Bogolo Kenewendo said US demand for natural diamonds has strengthened, noting that sales at US independent jewellers rose 8.8% during the first half of the year.

She told Bloomberg,

“We are beginning to see what is possible when Botswana’s diamonds are marketed with conviction and its story is told to the world,” while adding,

“But our work is not yet done.”

Why the push matters

Starting in 2023, natural stones have faced softer demand as lab-grown competitors gained ground, and that slide helped tip Botswana’s economy into recession last year. Diamonds bring in about one third of government revenue and make up most of the country’s foreign currency earnings. The US is the destination for more than half of yearly natural diamond sales.

The marketing plan and markets to watch

Botswana has teamed up with Namibia, South Africa and Angola, alongside De Beers and the Natural Diamond Council, on a worldwide effort to stoke demand. Through the Luanda Accord signed in June last year, the group committed 1% of their yearly diamond sales revenue to a Council-led campaign. Kenewendo said India is an expanding opportunity, while China will require consistent, longer term engagement.

As she put it, “We must market natural diamonds aggressively, tell the Botswana story more boldly, and make sure consumers understand the people, places and purpose behind every stone.”

What this could mean for your wallet

If US buyers keep leaning back towards mined stones, that supports a key export earner for Botswana and steadies a market that has been wobbly since 2023. For anyone eyeing jewellery purchases, watch how marketing narratives and consumer sentiment shift in the US, India and China – that mix can influence availability, pricing and what retailers put in the case next season.
