Ministry of Health signs a historic agreement that will transform Botswana’s health sector beyond recognition.

Botswana has reached a significant milestone in strengthening its health system through the signing of a strategic agreement between the Ministry of Health and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) based Abu Dhabi Health Data Services (ADHDS), represented by CEO Kareem Shahin, with the Government represented by Acting Permanent Secretary Dr. Tshepo Machacha, in the presence of Minister of Health Hon. Dr. Stephen Modise, in Gaborone this week.

This historic agreement launches a 10-year partnership for the supply of pharmaceuticals and essential medical products, aimed at building a more reliable and sustainable medical supply chain, improving access to medicines and health technologies, and enabling more efficient and timely procurement.

It also opens up avenues for cooperation in digital health transformation, genomics, precision medicine, health-sector investment, and local and regional capacity development.

Coming shortly after Parliament’s approval of the National Health Insurance Policy on 19 August 2026, the partnership will help ensure that expanded healthcare access is underpinned by sustainable financing, resilient medicine supplies, functional health technologies, and quality services.

This historic development marks a major step towards addressing longstanding challenges such as medicine shortages and dysfunctional equipment, paving the way for a stronger, more responsive and sustainable healthcare system in Botswana.”
