African Bush Camps (ABC) has partnered with the Department of Roads to repair potholes along the Disaneng–Matlapana Road in an effort to improve access for local communities and tourists travelling to the Okavango Delta.
The road maintenance project covers the stretch from Sedudu Exit 6 in Disaneng to the Matlapana junction, where workers are filling potholes that have made the route difficult and unsafe for motorists.
African Bush Camps Group Maintenance Manager, Keegan Ockhuizen, said the initiative is part of the company’s commitment to supporting government efforts while contributing to community development.
“We are working together with the Department of Roads to improve this road because it is an important route for both residents and tourists. This initiative is about supporting government and bringing the community together,” Ockhuizen said.
He noted that the road has deteriorated significantly over time, prompting the company to intervene. Instead of using premix asphalt, the team is repairing the potholes with a combination of gravel and cement to provide a more durable temporary solution. Ockhuizen said African Bush Camps has a long history of supporting communities across Ngamiland through infrastructure and community development initiatives.
He explained that the company has previously worked with communities in Khwai and Ditshiping and has also assisted in maintaining roads within the NG32 concession, where seasonal flooding has damaged access routes. He encouraged other tourism operators to join hands with government and communities in undertaking similar projects that benefit both residents and the tourism industry.
“We believe that by working together we can make a real difference. We encourage more operators to support community initiatives such as road maintenance because reliable infrastructure benefits everyone,” he said.
The Department of Roads representative Rebecca Bikitshane welcomed the partnership, saying the assistance comes at a time when government is facing financial constraints. She acknowledged that the Disaneng–Matlapana Road has been in poor condition for some time, affecting motorists and increasing the risk of accidents.
Bikitshane said repairing the potholes will improve safety and make travelling easier for road users while government continues to seek long-term solutions for road maintenance. The collaboration highlights the growing role of the private sector in supporting public infrastructure and improving access to one of Botswana’s most important tourism destinations.
