Gaborone – Minister of Environment and Tourism Wynter Mmolotsi has launched the Botswana’s Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), an internationally recognised framework developed by the United Nations and the World Tourism Organization to accurately measure tourism’s contribution to the economy, including its impact on GDP, employment and investment.
The Minister also launched the Tourism Statistics System (TSTATS) and its mobile application, which modernises the way to collect and share tourism data. With the mobile App, operators and stakeholders can submit information in real time, reducing delays and improving accuracy.
According to Mmolotsi, the TSTATS will be the backbone of future TSA compilations, enabling Botswana to produce annual accounts with confidence and full ownership.
He said the new system would strengthen evidence-based policy making, improve transparency for investors and stakeholders, and enhance Botswana’s ability to benchmark the performance of its tourism sector against international standards.
Mmolotsi said the tools placed Botswana on the global stage, allowing it to benchmark against other nations, attract investment and demonstrate transparency in how tourism could be measured. The Minister said tourism statistics were not about government planning, but also about livelihoods, jobs, and opportunities for communities across Botswana.
Therefore, he called upon the private sector to use the TSA and expenditure data to innovate, improve competitiveness, and attract investment
