Botswana.- Betway Botswana has committed BWP 4.3m (€272,000) to upgrade the Montshiwa grounds in Kanye, turning the site into a community sports hub with a new football pitch and athletics track. The grounds, owned by the Kanye Council, will serve the public, hosting events such as national celebrations and school games.
The project includes solar-powered lighting for evening use, ablution facilities, a guardhouse and a storeroom for equipment like cones and hurdles. Local artists will decorate the brick structures and tuck shops will generate funds for ongoing maintenance. Training in resource management will help ensure the grounds stay in good condition.
Michelle France-Mabiletsa, Managing Director of Betway Botswana, explained that the donation is intended to support skill development among local youth.
She said: “We believe that every community holds its own hidden special gold talent, creativity, speed and resilience, and sometimes, all that potential needs is a launchpad.”
She noted that the company has seen athletes training on rough surfaces with limited equipment and that this initiative will provide them with better resources.
France-Mabiletsa added that the company wants to partner with the government to promote Botswana’s athletes on the global stage.
She said: “We are not just building a pitch/track; we are laying down the foundation for Botswana’s next generation of Olympic heroes and cultural ambassadors. We are transforming local aspiration into national pride.”
The pledge event was attended by government officials, local dignitaries, sports officials and athletes, including Collen Kebinatshipi, a 21-year-oldwho made history as the first male athlete from Botswana to win a gold medal in the 400m race at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. With construction set to begin soon, Betway Botswana plans to extend similar support to other areas in the country.
