Botswana President Duma Boko on Tuesday unveiled the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme, calling for bold ideas to accelerate the country’s growth and drive national development. Through the programme, Botswana aims to reshape its economic landscape through inclusive and sustainable development, Boko said.
The programme seeks to drive Botswana’s transition into a more diversified, resilient and globally connected economy.
“The programme will establish Botswana as a regional anchor for cross-border financial activity, leveraging our legal certainty, political stability, and reputational standing,” Boko said.
He said that the initiative aligns with the government’s manifesto and promotes macroeconomic stability and resilience to global shocks.
“We will attract local and international investors with precision, purpose, and a world-class execution framework,” Boko said.
The president made the remarks at an event that also marked the launch of the Call for Ideas website, part of a four-week nationwide campaign inviting bold, scalable projects, public sector reforms, and high-impact proposals to support the programme.
Botswana’s economy has continued to lose momentum in recent years, recording 3.2% growth in 2023 but facing a projected 3.1% contraction in 2024, driven by weakening global demand for diamonds and declining production. Diamond exports account for over 90% of the country’s total exports, according to a World Bank update in April.
