Dr Chiyapo, Senior Clinical Radiation Oncologist at SKMTH, his team, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Radiation Protection Inspectorate (RPI) at Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital (SKMTH) have reported a great milestone for Botswana:
On the 19th June 2025 , the team successfully performed the first Interstitial Gynaecological brachytherapy case. This is a cancer treatment therapy delivered directly into the tumour, improving local control while saving surrounding healthy tissues.
The therapy is especially helpful for advanced or recurrent pelvic tumours that are not suited to intravacitary (a radioactive source placed near or outside cavity or tumour) techniques only. It allows for individual treatment plans and leads to better outcomes and reduced toxicity.
“We are committed to ensuring that for every investment made on the machines, human capital development and other resources, our patients get the full medical benefits,” Medical Physics Team.
For more information on how to access this therapy, please call the SKMTH Oncology Centre at telephone number (+267) 3735574.
