In an official visit to Hungary aimed at strengthening economic ties and deepening bilateral relations, President Boko engaged with the President of Hungary, Tamás Sulyok, and his prime minister on Friday, highlighting opportunities across key sectors including pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, ICT, and tourism.
The visit, the first since Botswana and Hungary established diplomatic relations in 1980, marks a significant milestone for Botswana’s international outreach.
At a high-level business forum, over a dozen companies from industries such as automotive, water treatment, and pharmaceuticals presented proposals to Botswana’s leadership. The President underscored the country’s readiness to partner with foreign firms, emphasising the potential for joint ventures and investment in sectors with identified growth trajectories.
Pre -forum discussions highlighted an ongoing educational partnership between Botswana and Hungary, which has resulted in at least 15 Botswana students studying in Hungary under a joint government scholarship – a programme set for expansion to about 50 students.
Negotiations between the two governments aim to formalise and extend this initiative, prioritising training in ICT, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies vital for Botswana’s development.
The official visit further cements Botswana-Hungary relations, the first since establishing diplomatic ties 45 years ago. Both sides expressed enthusiasm about deepening cooperation and exploring new areas of bilateral engagement, with the Hungarian President and his Prime minister , Viktor Orbáno emphasising their appreciation for the visit and prospects for collaboration. The president’s talks with the Prime Minister and other senior Hungarian officials reflected mutual interest in increasing economic and cultural exchanges.
The Botswana delegation expressed confidence that tangible outcomes, including increased investment, educational exchanges, and tourism, would follow. The government stressed that translating commitments into action remains its top priority as it seeks to leverage Hungary’s advanced technological and industrial capabilities for Botswana’s national development.
