Okavango Craft Brewery has been awarded the African Celebration Award at this year’s African Beer Cup, the continent’s most prestigious beer competition with 260 entries spanning 14 African countries.
The award honours beers, from around Africa, brewed with ingredients or processes that celebrate African heritage, culture, and community impact.
The winning beer was brewed with African Pearl millet — a traditional grain grown by small-scale, elephant-aware farmers in northern Botswana.
These farmers use agricultural practices designed to reduce human-elephant conflict in a programme established and facilitated by local NGO, Ecoexist Trust

By sourcing millet locally to use in all our brews, Okavango Craft Brewery supports rural livelihoods while promoting peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife.
“This award is more than just a nod to a great beer — it’s recognition of a movement,” said Murray Stephenson, Head of Operations at Okavango Craft Brewery.
“We’re working to prove that a brewery can produce world-class beer, uplift local farmers, and contribute to conservation — all in the same sip.”
The African Celebration Award is a special category within the African Beer Cup, designed to highlight award winning beers that capture the spirit of the continent through local ingredients.
Okavango Craft Brewery, based in Maun at the gateway to the Okavango Delta, has quickly established itself as a leader in purpose-driven brewing. Their mission goes beyond making great beer — it’s about crafting a more sustainable, inclusive future for southern Africa.
