Botswana is poised to transform its healthcare sector with a collaboration with the Susan Thompson Buffet Foundation. President Duma Boko this week met with a delegation from the Foundation to discuss collaboration on financing for universal health coverage (UHC) and improved delivery of primary healthcare as well as sexual and reproductive health services in Botswana.
Welcoming the Vice President of the STBF, Dr. Senait Fisseha, President Boko said this collaboration was significant for Botswana, as the country seeks to eventually have a fully self-sufficient healthcare system.
The Government is expected to use the funds from the collaboration for maternal health services, the development of primary health strategies and policies; development of a national, surgical, obstetric and gynaecological plan that will ensure women deliver safely through surgery.
It will also focus on the prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Dr Fisseha, a lifetime gender advocate and an internationally renowned expert in reproductive health and rights, praised President Boko for his proactive approach to digitise the Botswana healthcare system, pointing out that most governments make misinformed decisions without supporting data.
