Sweden provides $3.9M to strengthen public health institutes in Mozambique, Botswana, Rwanda and Zimbabwe

The Swedish government has made available around US$3.9 million (€3.5 million) for a project to strengthen public health institutes in Mozambique, Botswana, Rwanda and Zimbabwe, it was announced this Thursday.

The funding, made available through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), will be implemented through a regional project called SPhIRhA’ (Strengthening Public Health Institutes for Resilience in Health in Africa)(over a period of four years, according to a note from the Swedish embassy.

SPhIRhA – an initiative to strengthen national public health institutes in the region with a special focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) – will also strengthen national public health institutions and promote evidence-based responses, with a direct impact on communities.

The Swedish ambassador to Mozambique, Mette Sunnergren, quoted in the document, highlighted “Sweden’s continued commitment to public health and sexual and reproductive health and rights, areas considered fundamental to promoting gender equality and sustainable development”.

“Together, we are building stronger and more inclusive health systems for a healthier, fairer and more resilient future,” Ambassador Sunnergren added.

SPhIRhA is coordinated by the Public Health Agency of Sweden and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), a public health agency of the African Union .
