Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis is in Botswana on an official visit until Friday. Davis is accompanied by four ministers and a parliamentary secretary.
They include, Minister of Foreign Affairs Fred Mitchell; Minister of Education Glenys Hanna-Martin; Minister of Economic Affairs Michael Halkitis; Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Mario Bowleg; and Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Investment and Aviation, John Pinger II.
OPM said Davis was invited to visit the country by Botswana’s president, Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi.
“The prime minister and his team seek to reinforce strong diplomatic ties between The Bahamas and Botswana and to explore new educational, economic, and trade opportunities for Bahamians,” OPM said.
“Both countries have national development strategies which require significant advances in food security, energy transition, digitalisation, climate adaptation, education, and sustainable development. Botswana has had notable achievements in value chain development in tourism and agriculture. It has a longstanding program which offers local communities the opportunity to participate meaningfully in tourism development and sustainable resource management.
“Both nations are vulnerable to climate change and are working to build alliances internationally to leverage fairer climate finance.
“The visit aims to unlock new economic ventures and educational exchanges and explore avenues for collaborative projects and trade opportunities.
“The visit to Botswana reflects the administration’s recognition that small nations can benefit greatly from building meaningful partnerships, and that international cooperation will be critical to strengthening and diversifying our country’s economy in the 21st century.”
Meantime, the President, His Excellency Dr. Mokgweetsi E. K. Masisi and the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, Honourable Philip E. Davis preluded the island country‘s official visit to Botswana with a joint press conference yesterday.
President Masisi said the visit is solidifying a foundation laid by both nation’s former leaders who had both visited each other’s countries. He further explained they discussed how to further the relations under different sectors such as Tourism, Youth, Gender and Culture and financial services.
For his part, Prime Minister Davis said he believes in the power of connection and the beauty of exchange. He also highlighted that it was clear that the Bahamas and Botswana are on the path to a solid partnership, with each ready to explore and harness opportunities for their mutual benefit.
