Actom High Voltage Secures Contract For 60 MW Phase Of Botswana’s Selebi-Phikwe Solar PV Plant

15 February 2024

Electromechanical equipment manufacturer Actom High Voltage has successfully obtained a contract to furnish high-voltage equipment for the Selebi-Phikwe solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, currently in progress in Botswana.

The initial 60 MW phase of the 120 MW solar PV facility is being developed through collaboration between the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) and renewable energy company Scatec. Actom High Voltage Equipment divisional CEO Casbah Zwane explains that the company’s contract involves supplying and delivering a comprehensive range of 220 kV high-voltage equipment for the grid connection phase of the project. This equipment will facilitate stepping up the power generated by the solar farm, integrating it into BPC’s electricity network.

Zwane emphasises the significance of this project for Actom High Voltage Equipment, providing exposure to opportunities for expanding export markets. While recognised primarily as a South African company with a strong local focus, Actom aims to extend its presence beyond Southern Africa as part of its growth strategy.

Actom High Voltage will source the equipment for the project from its technology partners in Spain, India, and China, as these specific voltage components are not produced locally. Manufacturing of these components has commenced, with delivery to the project anticipated by the end of September.

Zwane highlights the company’s ability to diversify its supply chain and meet the energy sector’s demands by relying on global technology partners. The flexibility to deliver through a diverse supply chain network and various manufacturing options, beyond its South African factories, played a crucial role in securing the contract within the project’s tight timeframes.

Actom is optimistic about securing a similar contract for the second phase of the project once the initial 60 MW phase is completed. This subsequent phase will involve installing the remaining 60 MW capacity at the solar farm. The collaboration with Scatec provides Actom with access to opportunities beyond South Africa’s borders and across the African continent.
