President Mokgweetsi Masisi has been elected as chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation. This took place on Monday during the virtual 40th Heads of State and Governments of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Ordinary Summit.
President Masisi takes over from Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The summit received a report on the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19 on SADC economies and approved the proposed measures aimed at addressing the sectoral effects.
The summit also approved the SADC Vision 2050 whose firm foundation is based on peace, security and democratic governance undertaking the pillars of Industrial Development and Market Integration, Infrastructure Development in Support of Regional Integration, as well as Social and Human Capital Development.
The summit expressed solidarity and commitment to supporting Mozambique in addressing the recent terrorism and violent attacks and commended the country for its continued efforts to combat terrorism. It also commended the Kingdom of Lesotho on its recent smooth and peaceful transition of power.
Delivering his closing remarks, the SADC new Chairperson and Mozambique President, His Excellency Filipe Jacinto Nyusi applauded Zimbabwean President, Emmerson Mnangagwa for leading the Troika organ and all the work he has done. South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa was elected as the incoming chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security.
The next summit takes place in Maputo, Mozambique in March 2021.
