The one thousand (1000) Girolando dairy cows that the government is working on procuring from Brazil will come in batches of two hundred (200) with the first one expected to arrive in May this year.
When answering a question in parliament recently, the Assistant Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship Baratiwa Mathoothe said upon delivery, the cows will be observed and allowed to acclimatise for a period of six to nine months. Procurement of the dairy cows is anticipated to be completed within twenty four months.
The country has a shortfall of 9 million litres of milk annually, highlighting a significant gap in achieving a sustainable and reliable milk supply for Batswana.
In the last State of the Nation Address President Duma Boko had announced the Government’s aim to procure these cattle from Brazil in order to improve milk production from 13% to over 60% by this year.
