Botswana’s President Duma Boko is traveling to Oman to sign cooperation deals including over natural resources as his government strives to boost its stake in leading diamond company De Beers.
Boko will hold talks through Tuesday with Oman’s Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq Al Said, his office said in a statement on Sunday. The meetings come ahead of an April 16 deadline for bids of the 85% stake in De Beers being sold by Anglo American Plc.
Botswana, despite being cash strapped, is hanging onto its ambition to secure control of De Beers, a person familiar with the situation told Bloomberg last week. The company mines most of its diamonds in Botswana and the country already holds a 15% stake.
“Following their meeting, the two leaders will witness the signing of three key agreements covering partnerships in solar energy, minerals and oil,” Boko’s office said.
Boko told Bloomberg in September that his country was in talks with a sovereign wealth fund in Oman to finance the purchase of a controlling stake in De Beers.
