17-year-old A-Levels Al-Nur School student Aditya Gopakumar has put Botswana in the global academic records after Cambridge recently awarded him the Top award in the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level 2023 Accounting.
Following his impressive achievement, Aditya said in an interview he is extremely grateful to have received the Top in the World Award for Accounting.
“Accounting has been my passion ever since I took it up for the first time in Form 2, and I immediately found it intriguing how mathematics (which I am particularly fond of) could be integrated into the real-world setting: dealing with business operations, analysis and measures,” he said.
The brain box says for his IGCSE exams, one of his goals was to achieve a Top in the World Award, which he unfortunately did not at the time.
“In addition to my achievement in Accounting, I managed to obtain 3 other awards at AS Level: Top in the Country in Mathematics, Best across 4 Subjects in Botswana, as well as a High Achievement Award in Further Mathematics, which I had to study outside school,” he added.
Not surprisingly, in 2022, Aditya achieved 11 A*s in his IGCSEs, which in turn earned him the Best across 8 Subjects in Botswana Award and the Top in the country for Additional Mathematics Award.
Success attributed to parents, teachers
Aditya attributed his impressive success to his parents, highlighting their unwavering encouragement over the years helped him push to achieve great things. He said each time he started slacking, his parents were always quick to step in and urge him on. When he started feeling the heat of exam pressure, his parents were there to support him. For that reason, he strongly feels without them, he would not have achieved any of this success.
He added;
“I would also like to extend a massive thanks to my teachers at Al-Nur School. They have been nothing but supportive, sacrificing their time to teach us in the afternoons, Saturdays, and holidays, to ensure that we were fully prepared for the final exams.”
Aditya made special mention and acknowledgement of his Accounting teacher, Mr. Madzingira, who he says has been instrumental in his achievements.
“The school itself has been hugely important, as the effort to obtain the best and latest textbooks, and the emphasis on academic excellence has created the perfect environment for me to perform, for which I am also thankful for,” he added.
