Botswana highlights tourism as key to socio-economic transformation

Speaking at the 2026 Tourism Pitso Francistown, Vice President and Minister of Finance Ndaba Gaolathe stated that Botswana’s tourism industry i has the remarkable capability to contribute to the country’s socio-economic development. 

Recently, Botswana launched the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme and its National Development Plan 12. With these two initiatives, the government is focusing on inclusive development and economic activity at the grassroots level. Gaolathe reiterated that tourism is of paramount importance, as it will further develop the economy and the society, especially in the economically marginalized areas.

Gaolathe, acknowledged the importance of the tourism industry in the sustained development of a country. Given the focus on minimising economic leaches and maximising the retention of value, Gaolathe said that tourism should be at the centre of Botswana’s quest to be a competitive economy in the world. He emphasised that a bottom-up approach and community tourism should be prioritised to enhance economic sustainability and ensure that the tourism industry benefits the local population.

Growth in tourism’s economic contribution and regional development

Minister Gaolathe’s address also pointed to the substantial impact tourism already has on Botswana’s economy. The sector recorded 1,183,432 international arrivals in 2023, contributing 5.1% to GDP and supporting over 58,000 jobs across the country. These figures highlight how tourism can catalyse economic growth by creating employment, generating foreign exchange, and supporting local economies.

Tourism growth in Botswana is not only beneficial for the capital and popular tourist destinations but also for rural and regional areas. By distributing tourism revenues more evenly across the country, tourism can help diversify the economy, reducing reliance on traditional sectors. 

The government’s commitment to boosting rural tourism will ensure that these areas become integral to the national tourism strategy, making tourism a more balanced contributor to the country’s economic development.

Accelerating tourism sector development through legislation and policy

Minister of Environment and Tourism, Wynter Mmolotsi, discussed several measures aimed at accelerating tourism growth in Botswana. One key initiative is the launch of a tender to appoint a consultant to assess the impact of local per diems on tourism, which will inform necessary policy adjustments. Mmolotsi also highlighted the Community-Based Natural Resource Management Bill, which seeks to strengthen community ownership and involvement in tourism, thus ensuring that local populations directly benefit from the sector’s growth.

Additionally, a Cabinet-approved review of tourism licensing procedures is in the works, aimed at improving the investment climate and making it easier for tourism businesses to thrive. 

These steps are designed to enhance private sector participation in tourism and ensure that the country remains competitive in attracting international investment. By improving policy frameworks and infrastructure, Botswana is positioning itself as a prime destination for tourism investment and long-term growth.

Regional and global connectivity: A pathway for expanding tourism

Another important aspect of tourism growth highlighted during the Pitso is the expansion of regional and global connectivity. Strengthening tourism infrastructure and enhancing connectivity will be essential to improving the ease of travel for visitors from across Africa and beyond. By promoting cross-border tourism initiatives and improving access to remote destinations, Botswana aims to position itself as a key hub for regional tourism in southern Africa.

Additionally, by investing in local infrastructure and improving flight connectivity, the country is set to benefit from the growth in regional travel as more tourists explore the Southern African region. 

This strategic focus on connectivity is vital for sustaining tourism growth and ensuring Botswana remains a competitive player in the wider African tourism market.

Tourism as a driver of sustainable growth and community empowerment

The overarching theme of the 2026 Tourism Pitso was Tourism as a Catalyst for Economic Transformation and Sustainable Growth Through Partnerships. This emphasis on collaboration highlights the importance of working together with local communities, government agencies, and private sector partners to create a sustainable tourism ecosystem.  As community-based tourism gains traction, local businesses, from hotels to tour operators, will see increased opportunities to capitalise on growing tourist demand and become integral to the tourism value chain.

By promoting sustainable tourism practices, the government aims to ensure that the benefits of tourism are distributed equitably, empowering local communities and fostering long-term economic resilience. 

This commitment to sustainability will not only protect the natural environment but also create new opportunities for entrepreneurship and job creation within the tourism sector.

Tourism’s central role in Botswana’s socio-economic growth

During the 2026 Tourism Pitso, Botswana made tourism frequent in terms of the country’s economic transformation. After investing in Botswana’s tourism infrastructure, policies, and community-related initiatives and reforms, economic tourism will be the driving force for inclusive growth and shared prosperity for all.

As tourism continues to be of great value to Botswana’s socio-economic growth, the Government’s emphasis on sustainability, connectivity, and community will make tourism in Botswana a truly great economic driver.
