Project to create 37,000 jobs.

President Advocate Duma Boko has revealed that construction of the highly anticipated New Botswana City project will begin next month.

The multi-billion-pula development is located within the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport Special Economic Zone. It is being undertaken by the Botswana Development Corporation (BDC) in partnership with UAE-based investment conglomerate Albaddad Group.

Spanning 126 hectares, the project will feature a world-class convention and exhibition centre, four international hotels, retail spaces and other commercial facilities designed to position Botswana as a leading regional business and tourism destination.

BDC’s contribution includes land valued at P198 million, while key preparatory work, including the master plan and Environmental Impact Assessment, has already been completed.

According to project details announced earlier, the development is expected to create between 14,000 and 21,000 direct jobs during the construction phase, alongside an estimated 6,000 to 9,000 indirect employment opportunities across various sectors of the economy.

At the project’s official launch in June this year, President Boko described the development as a major step towards reducing Botswana’s dependence on diamond revenues and building a more diversified economy driven by services, tourism and digital innovation. Once completed, New Botswana City is expected to become a major economic hub, strengthening Botswana’s position as a regional centre for business, tourism and investment.

Speaking at the recent Botswana National Front (BNF) policy conference, President Boko said construction would begin in November and that the project was expected to employ more than 37,000 people in total.

Set to redefine Botswana’s economic landscape, the project will be designed to position Botswana as a premier regional hub for business, conferencing and tourism. Beyond its impressive infrastructure, New Botswana City is fundamentally a project about Batswana. It will unlock thousands of jobs for during both construction and operation, create vast opportunities for citizen contractors and SMMEs, and open sustainable value chains for local suppliers, farmers, artisans and creatives.

Through targeted skills transfer, apprenticeships and training in partnership with local institutions, the massive construction will equip the youth with world-class expertise to run and manage international standard facilities. This is infrastructure that delivers dignity, opportunity and inclusive growth.

Further details on opportunities will be shared by SEZA and BDC in due course.
