Gaborone, Sept. 30, 2026 (Lusa) – The Mozambican president, Daniel Chapo, announced on Wednesday that Mozambique is working with Botswana to develop air links to facilitate access to tourist destinations and create integrated holiday packages in the southern African region.
“We are working with Botswana to see if we can develop air routes that could link, for example, Botswana to Vilanculos in Inhambane province, Botswana to Maputo and other key tourist destinations,” said the Mozambican head of state during a meeting with the Mozambican community living in Botswana, where he was on a state visit.
Daniel Chapo explained that the aim is to create joint tourist packages enabling visitors to combine destinations across various countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), citing as an example an itinerary that includes Botswana, Zanzibar in Tanzania, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, tourist destinations in Mozambique and Kruger National Park in South Africa.
“So that we can create joint tourist packages, whereby a tourist, for example, arrives in Botswana, travels to Zanzibar in Tanzania, then on to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, then to Vilanculos in Inhambane, Mozambique, [and] then on to Kruger Park in South Africa,” he explained.
The national flag carriers, Air Botswana and Linhas Aéreas de Mozambique (LAM), entered into a commercial agreement in 2018 that enabled the Botswana-based carrier to extend its route network, via Johannesburg, to seven LAM destinations, namely Maputo, Beira, Vilanculos, Pemba, Tete, Nampula and Inhambane.
The agreement also provided for a single check-in process for passengers travelling from Gaborone, Maun and Francistown to LAM’s destinations in Mozambique, as well as the possibility for passengers from Mozambique to book and purchase tickets on Air Botswana flights to those three cities.
With no direct connections currently in place, the proposal now put forward by Daniel Chapo relates to the development of connections and integrated tourist packages.
The three-day state visit to Botswana is taking place at the invitation of President Duma Boko and aims to strengthen ties between the two countries, including the signing of bilateral agreements within the framework of the joint cooperation committee.
