A light show of 500 synchronised drones on Tuesday night attracted hundreds of spectators at the University of Botswana Stadium in Gaborone, to showcase the friendship and people-to-people exchanges between China and Botswana.
Preceded by lion and dragon dance, the drone light show by Chinese technicians featured a series of aerial visuals depicting both countries’ landmarks and icons, including the Great Wall, zebra, elephant, panda, peace dove, diamond, Kung Fu, the character of Botswana’s currency PULA and the Chinese character of blessing, as well as the sign of handshaking, to share the culture and highlight cooperation.
Turning on the lights of their mobile phones, the audience cheered and applauded the synchronised display, accompanied by music and illuminated in a brilliant explosion of colours.
Delivering a speech at the event, Chinese Ambassador to Botswana Fan Yong, wearing a pair of AI glasses, said this year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and African countries, and also highlighted the fact that the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges coincides with the 60th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Botswana.
“This evening’s show is more than a dazzling fusion of technology and artistry; it is also a vibrant celebration of the profound friendship between China and Africa, China and Botswana,” he said.
He spoke highly of the achievements of 51 years of bilateral relations, and vowed to continue to consolidate and strengthen the China-Botswana strategic partnership, ensuring it delivers more and more tangible benefits to the two peoples.
Helen P. Manyeneng, deputy speaker of Botswana’s National Assembly, who attended the event, listened to the introduction of the organisers with great interest in the drones and technology.
The event was hosted by China’s Shaanxi Radio and Television Media Convergence Group and the Chinese Embassy in Botswana, in partnership with Botswana’s Ministry of International Relations and Ministry of Sport and Arts.
