Botswana officially awarded hosting rights for the 2028 CAA Africa, Senior Championships

Botswana has officially been awarded the hosting rights  for the 25th CAA Africa Senior Athletics Championships in 2028, confirmed on May 11, 2026, by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), marking another major milestone for the nation and Botswana athletics.

The successful bid journey began in 2024 in Douala, where the presentation was made by BAA President Moses Bantsi. Ghana was awarded the 2026 edition, while Botswana was  slated to host the 2028 championships.

At the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Congress,BAA President (Ag.) Oabona Theetso delivered Botswana’s final presentation on the country’s readiness and preparedness to host the prestigious championships. The presentation was made in the presence of World Athletics President Sebastian Coe and other continental delegates, following the official awarding of the rights to host the 2028 championships, which will also serve as a pathway to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Botswana now proudly looks forward to welcoming Africa for yet another historic athletics showcase.

This prestigious event serves as a key qualifier for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and returns to Southern Africa for the first time since 2016. The bid was secured following Botswana’s successful staging of recent high-level athletics events, including the World Athletics Relays, which established the country as a premier hub for elite athletics.
