Gamblers in Botswana have raised alarm over platforms that crash during peak activity and leave payouts hanging for weeks, often without clear operator updates. These complaints have piled up as online betting has grown quickly, exposing gaps in transparency and reliability.
In response, the Gambling Authority has moved to tighten control of licensed firms. According to Lewanika Timothy of the Authority in a Business Explainer report, operators accused of disadvantaging players through system failures, poor record‑keeping, unexplained interruptions, and slow payment processing will now face stricter oversight.
Operators might face enforcement action
The Gambling Authority says it will no longer accept behaviour that damages trust in the betting industry. Online gambling now makes up a bigger share of total wagers, and with that growth has come more problems including system crashes and slow pay outs.
Analysts point out that outages during busy betting periods can hurt players directly and weaken confidence in licensed platforms.
The regulator plans to enforce licence rules more strictly. Operators will need to meet technical standards, handle disputes properly, and pay winnings on time. Those who fail could face fines or even lose their licences.
Experts believe these tougher rules may change the market. Smaller companies might struggle with the higher costs of compliance, while bigger firms could benefit from clearer rules and stronger customer trust.
Studies also show that markets with stronger regulation often grow more steadily and face fewer disputes, suggesting that stricter oversight could help the industry remain stable in the long run.
