Scatec ASA has commenced the commercial operation of the second 60 MW phase of the 120 MW Mmadinare Solar Cluster in Botswana, marking the completion of the renewable energy provider’s first project portfolio in the country.

The first 60 MW phase of the facility has been operational since March 2025. The full solar cluster will supply power under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Botswana Power Corporation, ensuring stable and predictable revenues. Scatec currently holds 100% ownership of the project portfolio but plans to dilute its long-term share by bringing in additional equity partners.

Company leadership welcomes milestone

Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog said the early completion reinforces the company’s commitment to expanding clean energy in Southern Africa.

“We are very proud to achieve COD for the second phase within budget and ahead of schedule, reinforcing our commitment to advancing renewable energy in the region,” he said.

“This is an important first step for Botswana, which holds significant potential for competitive and reliable renewable energy to support economic development.”

Alberto Gambacorta, EVP and GM for Sub-Saharan Africa, added that the milestone aligns with the country’s broader energy transformation.

“Solar power is increasingly central to powering communities and driving sustainable growth.
We are honoured to operate the country’s first utility-scale solar PV facility and contribute to Botswana’s long-term energy ambitions,” he said.

Clean energy contribution

Once fully operational, the two solar plants in the Mmadinare Cluster are expected to produce 280 GWh of clean electricity annually, supporting Botswana’s renewable energy goals and reducing approximately 380,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

Scatec will continue to provide Operation & Maintenance and Asset Management services for the solar facilities.
