Pangolin Voyager, a new solar-powered houseboat is setting a benchmark for sustainable safari travel on one of Africa’s richest wildlife waterways. The cruise offers an intimate and exclusive way to explore the Chobe River, with five spacious cabins for up to eight guests.
The vessel runs entirely on clean energy from high-efficiency solar panels built into its roof. This system removes the need for noisy diesel generators. Guests can enjoy a silent, emission-free experience that enhances wildlife encounters and minimises environmental impact.
The Pangolin Voyager also features electric outboard motors from UK-based RAD Propulsion. It is among the first houseboats in Africa to operate with zero emissions. The near-silent motors allow close approaches to animals without disturbance, creating prime conditions for photography.
“Our goal was to create truly sustainable wildlife experiences without losing comfort or photographic opportunities,” says Toby Jermyn, co-owner of Pangolin Photo Safaris.
“Solar power and electric propulsion reduce our carbon footprint while giving guests longer and quieter viewing in the best locations.”
Photography-ready design
Photography is at the heart of the Pangolin Voyager experience. Guests can access a dedicated eight-seat electric photo boat that operates alongside the main vessel. Each seat rotates and has a camera mount to help capture the perfect shot.
“The Chobe River offers exceptional game viewing, especially for elephant photography,” says Jermyn.
“With our solar-powered setup, photographers can stay longer in key spots without worrying about fuel or engine noise disturbing the animals.”
Guests also receive free use of professional-grade cameras and telephoto lenses. Expert photo hosts provide tailored tuition for all skill levels.
Conservation and comfort
The Voyager reflects Pangolin’s commitment to protecting fragile ecosystems. Its clean energy system includes substantial battery storage, ensuring continuous operation even on cloudy days. Solar panels power propulsion, air conditioning, charging stations, and photography gear.
“Our guests want experiences that reflect their environmental values,” says Jermyn.
“This allows them to enjoy Chobe’s beauty knowing they are not harming it through emissions or noise.”
Bookings
The Pangolin Voyager operates as an exclusive 3-night Chobe River safari or as part of Pangolin’s 7-day Best of Chobe and 10-day Chobe Delta and Kalahari photographic safaris. Packages include photo tuition, camera use, and expert guidance.
Pangolin Photo Safaris has led photographic safari travel in the Chobe region since 2011, offering custom-built photo boats and vehicles designed to give photographers the best possible shot.
