Botswana-based Machaba Safaris will open its first permanent water camp, Monachira Camp, in the Okavango Delta in May.
Located in the Moremi Game Reserve and named after the Monachira channel that flows alongside the camp, the new property will specialise in water-based safari experiences. The camp is positioned as one of the few in the region capable of offering year-round water safaris in the delta.
The property will feature eight luxury twin/double tents with ensuite bathrooms and two family tents, each equipped with two bathrooms.
All accommodations will be built on elevated wooden decks, providing views of the surrounding floodplains and wetlands.
While traditional game drives will be available, Monachira Camp’s primary focus will be water activities and guided nature walks. Guests will have options to explore via motorboat safaris to view aquatic species and larger wildlife from the water or take traditional mokoro (dugout canoe) rides through water lilies.
The camp’s proximity to the Gudigwa heronries, which serve as nesting grounds for thousands of herons, egrets and storks, positions it as a destination for bird-watching enthusiasts.
Accessibility to the remote location will be provided by light aircraft or helicopter transfers from Shinde Airstrip.
Machaba Safaris, a family-owned conservation company, currently operates 11 camps across Botswana and Zimbabwe. The company emphasises authentic African experiences with connections to local communities and a commitment to conservation practices that minimise environmental disruption.
Rates start at $920 per person sharing for a stay during the ‘secret season’ (from January to March) and go up to $1,600 per person sharing for high season.
