Sturdee Energy signs two PPAs for Botswana renewable energy projects

Independent power producer Sturdee Energy has entered into two power purchase agreements (PPAs) with the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) for two renewable energy IPP projects.

The solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, located in Bobonong and Shakawe, will have an installed capacity of 3MW and 1MW, respectively. Under the terms of the PPAs, Sturdee will sell clean electrical energy to the BPC for 25 years, and the projects are expected to produce over 10 000 MWh in their first year of operation. The projects will be built at a cost of about $5.5-million.

“The signing of the two PPAs marks a major milestone for the adoption of renewable energy in Botswana’s new energy mix and increases energy security for our country in an environmentally sustainable manner.

“The two projects mark the beginning of the rollout of 12 grid-tied solar PV projects, which are scheduled for completion by end of 2022. When realised, these projects will contribute a total of 35 MW of clean energy to our grid,” says BPC CEO, David Kgoboko.
