Government establishes COVID-19 relief fund

The Government of Botswana has established a relief fund to prepare for the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic in Botswana, it’s been announced.

When addressing the media today, the Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Kabo Morwaeng said individuals, companies, non-governmental organisations and institutions can give either financial or in kind. The Minister said the government has opened accounts across eight commercial banks in Botswana, adding that an account has been opened with Bank of Botswana for donors outside the country. He encouraged the private sector to assist in the fight against coronavirus, urging Batswana to take precautions seriously for their safety.

For her part, the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Peggy Serame stated that all liquor outlets will be closed for 30 days effective 28th March 2020. She also said the gyms, hair and beauty salons will be closed effective Saturday 28th March 2020 but didn’t indicate how long for. She further stated that some hotels have offered to house those under quarantine for free. Minister Serame said the Preparedness and Response Team are exploring ways through which they can assist those directly affected by the measures put in place by the government.

The Government of Botswana explained that the Relief Fund that will assist in mitigating the impact of COVID-19 or Coronavirus as it is commonly known, has been set up. This is to allow members of the public, Non-Governmental Organisations, companies as well as institutions to make financial contributions towards the fight against the spread of COVID-19 in Botswana.
