Botswana urges restructuring of AU

Botswana on Monday called for the restructuring of the African Union (AU) as it supports the reform agenda of the continental body. In a statement released ahead of the 11th Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government which convened in Ethiopia on 16 November, Botswana said it;

“strongly supports the reform agenda of the African Union, which is aimed at restructuring the continental body to effectively and efficiently address developmental challenges, in particular, the attainment of Agenda 2063: The Africa we Want!”

The statement added that the summit, which will be held under the 2018 theme: “Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation”, will deliberate on the AU institutional reform, with special focus on the reform of the AU Commission and the mandate of the AU Development Agency (AUDA).

In addition, the Extraordinary Summit will consider the outcome of the 19th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council on the ACP post-2020 Framework. Botswana President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi was due in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 16th November 2018, to attend the 11th Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), to run from 17-18th November 2018.
