Botswana ranks highly in 2017 Ibrahim Index

mo-ibrahim-foundationThe 2017 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) has been released. The index once again places Botswana in third position out of 54 African countries, with an overall score of 72.7 (down from 73.7 last year).

A similar downward trend was apparent across other top countries as well as the continent as a whole. Mauritius was placed top of the pack with a score of 81.4, beating the Seychelles into second place with 73.7 points.

The IAAG Index consists of four overarching categories with 14
indices based on 100 sub-indices.

In the four overarching categories, Botswana was 2nd in the areas of Safety and Security with a score of 81.6, and ranked third in Human Development with a score of 78.0, sixth in terms of Sustainable Economic Opportunity with a score of 64.6 and tenth in terms of Participation and Human Rights with a score of 66.4.

Botswana’s scores and various positions in each of the 14 indices were as follows: 

Rule of Law – 92.8 percent (2)
Accountability – 66.3 percent (3)
Personal Safety – 67.2 percent (2)
National Security – 100 percent (1)
Participation – 83.3 percent (4)
Rights – 52.0 percent (20)
Gender Issues – 65.2 percent (18)
Public Management – 60.3 percent (7)
Business Environment – 68.7 percent (4)
Infrastructure – 64.3 percent (5)
Rural Sector – 65.0 percent (7)
Social Welfare – 76.8 percent (3)
Education – 72.0 percent (3)
Health – 84.6 percent (6).

With regards to the sub-indices; Botswana ranked first in 22 categories including Judicial Process, Transfer of Power, accountability of Public Officials, low levels of Corruption by Public Officials, lack of Social Unrest, lack of Political Violence; low level of Human Trafficking, Peace and Security, Legitimacy of Political Process, Overall and Workplace Gender Equality, Public Administration, Budget Management, Fiscal Policy, Social Safety Nets, Narrowing Income Gaps, Environmental Policy and HIV/AIDS response.

The Ibrahim Index of African Governance is an analysis by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation aimed at improving the level of governance within African countries. The annual index provides a framework for citizens to hold governments accountable, while helping governments to focus attention on creating prosperous nations by ensuring better delivery of goods and services and favourable policy outcomes across every country on the continent.
