Visitors to Botswana exceed 2 million in 2016

The Minister of Wildlife, Environment and Tourism, Tshekedi Khama says tourists coming into Botswana exceeded 2 million in 2016.

The minister said this at a press conference he held with both the local and international media following the official opening of the Botswana Travel & Tourism Expo (BTTE) in November.

Given these fantastic figures, Botswana’s investment in the Botswana Travel and Tourism Expo, now in its fourth year, may very well be paying off. Minister Tshekedi said about 60 percent of the tourists are from the US, 30 percent European, while the remaining 10 percent come from the rest of the world.

He said tourism plays a big role in the economy of the country, contributing largely to the country’s GDP, explaining that it focuses mainly on wildlife. For this reason, he said measures should be put in place to ensure that wildlife is protected.

The minister said Botswana has proven itself to be a safe-haven for wildlife as indicated by the numbers of wildlife that migrate to the country from neighbouring ones on a daily basis.
