Spotlight on Kana Jang restaurant at Nhabe Museum

Kana Jang? Which means Or What? may seem like a bit of a weird name choice for a restaurant to some. But the owner, Malebogo Busang, says the name was inspired by her free spirited nature and was chosen by design.

Kana Jang? Is located at Nhabe museum, less than five minutes away from the airport. Kana Jang makes for a lovely hang out for both locals and tourists. If you visit Maun and want to see the Museum, the restaurant would be a lovely place to stop off for a bite to eat. It is also within this area that you find a number of quaint little curios gift stores, right from the airport area all the way down to the museum.

Busang says the name Kana Jang? came to her during a conversation over coffee with a friend. Busang says the name is meant to be a conversation starter. She was looking for something distinct, which could intrigue, start conversations and could be loosely used and interpreted.

Ms Busang describes the restaurant as “a creative space that has something for everyone.” The Serowe-born mother of two moved to Maun in 2013, following a cancer scare. She left her corporate job and decided to follow her heart to open the restaurant. Busang says the restaurant serves Setswana cuisine with a modern twist. There was a time when Maun was bereft of restaurants, but now locals and visitors alike are spoilt for choice, boasting fast-food joints such as KFC, Debonairs Pizza, Nandos and Cappello.

There are also more upscale restaurants such as Tendurei, Chutney and of course, all the lodges on the fringes of Maun. With so much variety in the catering sector, Busang still spotted a unique selling point in her restaurant idea and set out to take the traditional Setswana route, while most restaurants focus on various cuisines of the world.

“I wanted to create a traditional home-cooked meal feel but with a twist of contemporary taste to it.”

Given its location at the museum, Busang has used this to her advantage through use of both contemporary and rustic décor, in celebration of Maun’s enigmatic scene as well as its creativity.

“Cooking is an art and we use food to create something delicious.”

Although Kana Jang focuses mainly on traditional dishes such as bogobe with seswaa, they like to get creative and offer funky Setswana snacks with a very interesting twist!


For instance, you’ll find snacks like the following on the menu:

Phaphatha stuffed with seswaa served with a side salad
Similar to English crumpets with pulled beef

Mouth-watering fat cake stuffed with pilchard fish in tomato sauce
A fat cake is similar to a doughnut without the hole in the middle


The restaurant also offers free WIFI as well as a magazine library. You can choose to sit in or hang out on the outside, but it’s so much nicer to sit outside and watch the world go by!

Busang says they continue to get a warm response from locals and tourists. She says they have had amazing support from the local NGOs and local authorities. Busang has also struck a great working relationship with some of the local tour operators and has been blessed with customising her menu for international tour groups.

If you are in Maun and want somewhere interesting to eat; whether you are a Motswana craving some gastro grub or a visitor looking for a walk on the wild side, I would certainly recommend you stop by Kana Jang?, If not for the authentic Setswana food, then for the great ambience.
